In a sentence: Dress a True Spring in warm, bright, fresh colours — coral, golden yellow, leaf green and turquoise — over golden neutrals like ivory and camel, with gold jewellery and no black near the face. Skip to the capsule colours or find your season.

A True Spring client once asked me to help her "make black work," and the honest answer was that we couldn't — but we could make her forget she ever wanted it. We pulled a warm camel trouser, an ivory tee and a coral cardigan, added a thin gold chain, and she looked like she'd just got back from somewhere sunny. Same woman, same morning, no black in sight. That's the thing about dressing this season: it isn't about restriction, it's about leaning so far into warmth and clarity that the colours you used to default to stop tempting you.

This is the practical follow-on to the palette — how to actually build and wear a True Spring wardrobe. The capsule pieces worth owning, the outfit formulas I reach for on a casual day, a work day and an evening out, and the handful of things that quietly drag this season down. Everything below assumes you're warm, light-to-medium and bright; if you're still confirming that, hold on before you shop.

Building a True Spring capsule

A True Spring capsule is easy to build because the season is so internally consistent — warm, clear, golden — that almost everything goes with everything. Start with the bones, all in your golden neutrals so they layer endlessly:

  • A warm neutral trouser and a relaxed jean — camel, golden tan or warm beige for the trouser; a mid, slightly warm denim rather than a stark blue-black wash.
  • An ivory tee and an ivory or warm-beige knit — your "white" and your everyday layer. Ivory flatters where optic white can look a touch stark.
  • A colour piece for the top half — this is where the season lives. One coral or golden-yellow knit or shirt earns its place fast, because it sits near your face and does the lifting.
  • A camel or golden-tan outer layer — a trench, an unstructured blazer or a soft jacket. Warm neutral outerwear keeps you in your palette even on a throw-it-on day.
  • A leaf-green or turquoise "statement" piece — the colour that reads as your dark or your event piece, so you never need black for either.

The rule that makes it click: keep your warmest, clearest colour nearest your face, ground it with a golden neutral, and finish with gold. Eight or ten pieces chosen this way behave like a far bigger wardrobe, because they share one warm, vivid DNA and refuse to clash.

True Spring outfit formulas

Casual day. Mid-wash jean, ivory tee, warm coral cardigan thrown over, white-and-tan trainers, small gold hoops. It's the easiest True Spring formula going — warm colour at the face, a golden neutral on the bottom, gold to tie it off. Swap the coral for peach or aqua when you want it softer.

Work / smart. Camel trousers, a golden-yellow or warm-turquoise blouse, and an ivory or warm-beige blazer over the top. The neutral suiting reads polished while the colour up top keeps it unmistakably you rather than corporate. Finish with a thin gold chain and tan leather. If your office leans formal, let leaf green play the role black usually does — it's grown-up and still in your warmth.

Evening. A coral-red or warm-turquoise dress, gold jewellery, and a camel or golden-tan wrap. You don't need a little black dress here; a clear warm colour reads far more striking on a True Spring under evening light, and gold accessories do the glamour that black tries to. For a softer evening, a salmon-pink or peach slip with gold sandals is lovely.

Weekend / outdoors. Warm-beige chinos or a denim skirt, a bright warm-green or aqua knit, and a camel jacket. Bright, fresh and effortless — exactly the late-April-sunshine energy this palette is built on.

What to skip

  • Black and stark navy near the face. Too dark and too cool for your light-to-medium warmth — they cast a slight grey and harden your features. Keep them below the waist, if at all, and let camel or leaf green be your dark.
  • Cool and icy colours. Icy blue, blue-based fuchsia, cool grey and optic white fight your golden undertone and turn fresh skin sallow. Reach for warm turquoise, salmon and ivory instead.
  • Dusty, muted shades. Sage, dusty rose, greyed mauve and taupe flatten the clarity that makes you glow. Your colours work because they're clear — don't let them go chalky.

Confirm your season first

A capsule only saves you money and mornings once you know it's built on the right palette — and every piece above assumes you're warm, light-to-medium and bright. If a clear coral lights you up and black drags you down, you're very likely there: the True Spring guide covers your full palette, neutrals and metals in depth. If you're still deciding between the warm and bright seasons — True Spring, Light Spring, Bright Spring, True Autumn all sit close — our colour analysis guides walk through how each one reads, and a personal analysis pins down your exact undertone, value and chroma so the capsule you build flatters you rather than fights you.
