In a sentence: dress as a Light Summer in cool, light, softly greyed colours that blend into one another, and let texture do the work that high contrast would do for other people. Skip to the capsule colours or find your season.

The first thing I tell every Light Summer client is to put down the black blazer. It is the single most common mistake I see, and it is almost always the reason an otherwise lovely outfit looks slightly off in photos. Light Summer colouring is delicate and cool with low contrast between hair, skin and eyes, so a hard black edge near the face creates a fight the face usually loses.

Once that clicks, the rest gets easier. A Light Summer wardrobe is genuinely one of the most relaxing to build, because the whole palette is quiet and cohesive. The colours sit close together in depth, which means pieces mix almost without thinking. You are not building a wardrobe of statement items that clash if you look at them wrong. You are building a soft, watercolour set where everything talks to everything else.

Building a Light Summer capsule

Think in layers of softness rather than light-versus-dark. Because your colouring is low-contrast, the most flattering outfits stay within a narrow tonal band, so your capsule should give you several pieces of similar depth that all combine.

Start with the quiet workhorses. A soft navy blazer earns its place fast: it is your "black" stand-in for anything that needs structure, without the harshness. Add soft-navy or cool-greige trousers, a dove-grey knit, and a couple of relaxed light-denim pieces in a watered, washed blue rather than a deep indigo. These are the bones.

Then bring in colour through the tops, where it sits closest to your face and does the most work. Two or three soft pastels, powder blue, cool rose pink, soft mint, will carry a surprising number of outfits. A fine knit in light lilac or soft periwinkle gives you an easy hero piece. Keep fabrics soft to the eye too: brushed cotton, fine merino, washed linen and silk all read better on Light Summer than anything stiff or high-shine.

For the layer that pulls a look together, a soft floral or a fine stripe in your palette breaks up blocks of solid colour and adds the interest that contrast gives other seasons. One good print, repeated across outfits, goes a long way.

Light Summer outfit formulas

A formula beats a rule. Here are the combinations I lean on most, each built to stay within your soft, cool band.

Casual weekend. Watered denim-blue jeans, a powder-blue tee, and a dove-grey overshirt layered open. Trainers in powder white. The whole thing is tonal and easy, and the soft grey-blue range does all the lifting. Swap the tee for soft mint when you want a little more colour.

Work, smart. Soft-navy blazer and matching trousers, a cool rose-pink fine knit underneath, and rose-taupe loafers. This is your black-suit replacement, and it photographs far softer and more flattering on Light Summer skin. A delicate silver or rose-gold pendant finishes it without adding hardness.

Work, relaxed. Cool-greige wide-leg trousers, a light-lilac blouse, and a soft periwinkle cardigan over the shoulders. Keep accessories pale and fine. It feels considered without ever tipping into severe.

Evening. Soft plum dress or a soft-navy slip with a light-lilac wrap. This is where your deeper colours come out to play, and a little sheen, satin or fine silk, is welcome. Pearl or moonstone earrings and a soft metallic sandal keep the contrast gentle and the mood quietly elegant.

What to skip

  • True black and stark optic white near the face. Both overpower Light Summer colouring; reach for soft navy and powder white instead.
  • Warm, earthy or heavily saturated colours. Mustard, tomato red, rust and bright orange all clash with cool, light skin. If you love red, choose a cool raspberry kept away from the face.
  • High-contrast pairings and heavy, brassy gold. Sharp light-and-dark combinations and chunky yellow-gold hardware both fight the softness of the palette. Keep metals fine and a little muted.

Confirm your season first

A capsule only works once you know it is actually yours, because every piece above is chosen for cool, light, soft colouring, and the wrong season's palette will quietly undo all of it. If Light Summer sounds like you but you are not certain, read the full Light Summer guide to see the colouring in detail, or browse the rest of the colour analysis guides to compare the soft and light seasons side by side.

When you are ready to know for sure, find your colour season and build your capsule on solid ground.
