In a sentence: True Autumn makeup is warm, rich and earthy — brick and terracotta lips, peachy-bronze cheeks, copper and moss eyes, all over a golden-based foundation. Skip to the shade palette or find your season.

Hold a brick-red lipstick next to a fuchsia one against True Autumn skin and the difference is almost rude. The fuchsia pulls the blood out of the face — lips look bruised, the skin goes faintly grey. The brick does the opposite: the face warms up, the eyes brighten, the whole thing looks lit from inside. Same person, same lighting, two seconds apart. That's the entire brief for this season in one swatch.

I've made up a lot of True Autumn faces, and the mistakes are always the same two. Either someone's been sold a cool, pinky foundation that fights their gold all day, or they're reaching for the cool berries and frosty taupes that magazines push on everyone. Get the warmth right and True Autumn makeup is genuinely easy — the palette is small, forgiving, and almost impossible to overdo.

What makes True Autumn makeup work

True Autumn is the most decisively warm of the twelve seasons — golden, medium-deep, rich with a slightly muted edge, built on brick, terracotta, warm brown and gold. Makeup has to echo that, not argue with it. The skin already carries gold, so warm pigments melt in and read like they grew there; cool ones sit on top and look applied.

Two things follow from that. First, undertone beats everything — a warm shade two steps off in depth still flatters, but a cool shade in the perfect depth will read off. Second, finish matters as much as colour: True Autumn suits soft, slightly matte and satin textures more than high-shine frost, because frost goes cool and glassy where this colouring wants warmth. Think roasted, golden, autumn-light tones — spices rather than sweets, and never anything icy.

Brick #A6442E is the hero lip — warm, grown-up, flattering on nearly every True Autumn. Terracotta #BE6A45 is the easy everyday lip and doubles as a soft blush. Warm Brown-Red #8E4032 is the deeper evening lip, all spice. Tomato Red #B03A26 is the bold red that actually works here, because it leans warm, not blue. Peachy-Bronze Blush #C77A52 and Warm Apricot Blush #D98C5F are the two cheek tones that read sun-warmed instead of pink. Copper #B06A38 is the make-the-eyes-glow eyeshadow; Antique Bronze #7A5A2E is its richer cousin for definition. Moss #6E6A33 is the unexpected one — a warm olive-green that lights up brown and hazel eyes. Warm Brown #5C3D2A is your liner-and-crease anchor, the shade that replaces black everywhere.

Base & neutral tones: Warm Cream Highlight #EDE0C4, Soft Camel #C19A6B, Warm Taupe #9C7B5A, Cocoa #4A3526 (your warm "deep" for liner and depth, far kinder than black), and a Golden Bronzer #A77B4A to warm the whole face.

Lips, cheeks & eyes

Lips. Stay in the warm half of the rack: brick, terracotta and warm brown-red for colour, a caramel-toned warm nude for every day, and tomato red when you want a statement. A satin or soft-matte finish flatters most; if you like gloss, a warm bronze or copper-tinted one keeps it in season. The one thing to leave behind is anything blue-based — berry, plum, cool fuchsia.

Blush. Warm and low. Peachy-bronze, warm apricot or a sheer terracotta swept slightly back toward the temple gives that just-came-in-from-a-walk warmth. A golden bronzer can stand in for blush entirely, or sit just above it. Cool pink blush is the single most common misfire I see — it goes ashy and sits on the surface.

Eyes (plus liner and mascara). Copper, bronze, warm gold, moss and warm taupe are the everyday heroes, with warm brown in the crease for depth. For liner, reach for warm brown, bronze or deep olive rather than black — softer and far warmer against the skin. Mascara in brown-black or true warm brown finishes it; jet black can read hard on True Autumn lashes, so save it for a strong evening eye if at all.

What to avoid

  • Cool, pink-based foundation — the biggest culprit. It cancels the gold and leaves the skin looking flat and grey. Choose a yellow or golden-based base.
  • Cool lips and blush — blue-reds, fuchsia, cold mauve and pink blush all fight the warmth and make the face look drained.
  • Icy, silvery or heavily frosted eyeshadow and stark black liner — they go cold and harsh; swap to warm shimmers, bronze and brown.

Confirm your season first

All of this only works once you actually know you're a True Autumn — the warm shades above will fall flat on a cool-toned face, and the cool shades I told you to avoid are exactly right for someone else. If you haven't had your colours read, start with the True Autumn colour guide to see whether the season fits you, and browse the rest of the colour analysis guides to compare. Undertone is genuinely hard to judge in your own mirror, so the reliable way to settle it is a photo-based analysis — and once you know your season for certain, picking makeup stops being a guess.
